Killed By The Video Star

Weezer - Undone (The Sweater Song) Video Review | Woah, Woah, Wooooah

by Dave Parrack on December 9th, 2007

This is a strange video, and quite a weird song if I’m honest. I can’t believe this is actually 13 years old now, as I remember it coming out as if it were yesterday.

The song is off Weezer’s first album, often referred to as The Blue Album, when really it was just self titled. A lot of bands do that for their first album, it as if they’re not sure if that will be their only album or not so they just name it after themselves, and hope for the best.

There’s obviously another song on this album that more of you will know, and the video is certainly better known, namely Buddy Holly, and I do hope to cover that as soon as someone puts a full version on YouTube which I can embed.

I love this song, as it’s catchy while being as alternative as they come. The snatches of dialogue give it a strange air of not just being a pop record, but also of a conversational piece, but it all fits together really well.

The video was actually Weezer’s first, and you can kind of tell they’re not used to it. It looks strangely amateurish although it’s anything but.

It’s actually one of the first music videos directed by Spike Jonze, who went on to do Buddy Holly of course, as well as huge amount of other brilliant videos for the Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim amongst others.

It cost just $60,000 to make, and was all done in one take using a solitary steadicam.

The best bit about it all is that is looks like the band are having fun, and just pissing about, not taking it seriously at all. That’s what I occasionally want from my music videos to be honest.

A great video, and very fitting to the song, although don’t ask me what the dogs have got to do with it.
