Vanessa Carlton - ‘A Thousand Miles’ | AKA The Story Of The Travelling Piano
I adore everything about this video, Vanessa Carlton herself, the lyrics, her voice, and the magic travelling piano. The concept is a simple, yet brilliant one, and it’s beautifully orchestrated by the video’s director Marc Klasfeld.
The song itself is one of those ones I never tire of hearing, and even now, five years after its release, I can happily sit here and listen to the whole thing through multiple times.
The piano composition is gorgeous, and the orchestral parts fit perfectly in with both that, and Vanessa’s voice.
As for the video, well it’s brilliant, perfectly fitting both the song and the singer. The concept is clearly that Vanessa gets so emotionally entangled in the song that her mind wanders to all of those different places and scenes.
Having the piano actually travel to those places is inspired, and it’s fascinating to watch it all come to life so well on screen.
I can only imagine that in relaity, Vanessa and her piano were carted around the streets of New York on the back of a truck, which would kind of ruined the illusion had I seen it being filmed.
I love the bikers, the owl, the street scenes, the violinists, and everything that is included in the journey. A special mention must go out to the black horses on the beach scene, as the slow motion close up of Vanessa’s face was enough to make me fall in love with her.
A timeless song, and an innovative video which I think stands the test of time brilliantly.

I used to like this song. Unfortunately, it has been on every TV commercial here in the US that it’s lost it’s meaning to me.
