Killed By The Video Star

Vampire Weekend - ‘Oxford Comma’ Official Music Video Review | Shot In One Take

by Dave Parrack on July 4th, 2008

Vampire Weekend are a New York indie band who have already lit up Killed By The Video Star with their last single, A-Punk, which I described as an “antidote to the humourless R’n’B crap” that seems to be everywhere now.

While I don’t like this song quite so much, it is still an awesome slice of indie pop heaven, and the video is brilliantly shot, done as it is in one take, which gives the whole thing a very real quality.

Vampire Weekend Live On Stage

While A-Punk was fast and frivolous, Oxford Comma is slower, and almost more grown-up as a result. While A-Punk had instant appeal, this song is definitely a grower, and points towards a band growing up quickly.

The video is awesome, with one tracking shot capturing the whole thing, which is filmed like a three-part story complete with epilogue. The only problem is there isn’t much of a story to watch.

Music videos shot with very few cutaways isn’t new by any means. Just recently, The Feeling’s Without You consisted of just two shots, and a while ago now, Bjork’s It’s Oh So Quiet worked in a similar way.

Vampire Weekend are a band that proves indie pop/rock has an increasingly imprtant place in music today. In much the same way as Black Kids, this band emit energy and enthusiasm at every turn.
