U2 - ‘New Year’s Day’ Video Review | Perfect Song For The First Day Of 2008
U2 used to be a fantastic rock band, with strands of traditional Irish music melded perfectly with innovative sounds of their own, some brilliant guitar playing by The Edge, and some highly political lyrics by Bono.
And then the whole band starting believing the hype, and Bono in particular thought he was some kind of reincarnation of Christ, put on earth to sort out the world’s problems.
Thankfully, this song, New Year’s Day, a fitting post on the first day of 2008, was before all the crap got in the way, and so is just a brilliant slice of a band at the height of their power.
The song features a brilliant riff, and Bono’s distinctive voice wailing some forgettable yet ultra catchy lyrics.
The video isn’t the best, just showing the band in the snow, seemingly dressed up as a kind of travelling band of soldiers from the American revolution, but it works despite its shortcomings.
