Killed By The Video Star

The White Stripes - ‘Conquest’ | Jack White As A Matador - What More Do You Want?

by Dave Parrack on November 30th, 2007

The White Stripes are without a doubt one of the best bands ever to have walked the planet: Jack White is a brilliant musician, and song writing genius; Meg White is… not bad on drums.

This is the video for brand new song Conquest, which only just premièred on MTV a few days ago.

The song is actually a cover of a 1950s song of the same name by Corky Robbins, and made famous by Patti Page. It’s the third single to come from Icky Thump, and is due out on December 18th in the USA.

I actually don’t really like the song, it’s certainly one of the weakest on the album in my view, but this video transforms it in to a brilliant experimental work of art.

This is a classic case of a video being made which takes the song it’s based on up to a new, higher level.

It features Jack White as a matador fighting a bull, and mimicking the lyrics, there’s a role reversal when due to the bull being cunningly more clever than Jack, he gets the upper hand.

The bull manages to turn the tables by winking at Jack, giving him the eye, and eventually crying at the prospect of getting killed.

Through all this, Meg is stood on the sidelines, not doing an awful lot, except looking pretty in a kind of redneck sister kind of way… a bit like her role in the White Stripes themselves.

It’s a brilliant piece of musical theatre, and definitely drags the song kicking and screaming along with it.

Song: 5/10
Video: 9/10
