The Receiving End Of Sirens, Smoke, Mirrors and Wolf Punches
The Receiving End of Sirens
“Smoke and Mirrors”
Album: The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi
Oooh, look at me, jumping on the brand new video release! I can’t say this is an exclusive, because, well, it isn’t–but if you’re watching it today, Thursday, Sept. 27th, you’re probably one of the first to check it out!
I’m not usually a fan of “animal suit” videos, but this video escapes my unholy wrath for a few reasons. First, it’s a Receiving End of Sirens video and the band is absolutely amazing. Not that that fact has stopped me from trashing a video before, but it certainly weighs in these guys’ favor. Second, in the interest of complete disclosure, I’ve been hired to direct a video this weekend based off of a treatment the band wrote and, oh, does it ever involve animal costumes. Seeing as I’ve always considered animal costumes to be the bane of music videos’ existence, I’m struggling to come to terms with it. Hopefully, we have a new enough angle that it won’t come off as totally stale–either way, it’ll be wicked fun to shoot.
But back to TREOS…
The greatest thing about the animal costumes in this video is that you barely see them. You can tell these guys are dressed as wolves, but the blacks are so crushed that the costumes become shadow-like, and combined with the tight shots and small spaces, they really do feel rather creepy. The fluid, “ballet gone mad” dance quality to the video clicks tightly with the groove of the song and though I wish the concept had expanded on the basic idea of these creatures attacking the ballerina I still gotta give multiple thumbs up to the video.
Song: 8/10
Video: 7/10
Leaps and bounds over the All Time Low video: at least 8 or 9
