Killed By The Video Star

The Prodigy - ‘Firestarter’ Video Review | A Classic Piece Of British Techno

by Dave Parrack on January 11th, 2008

This is a niche video which seemed to cross musical barriers and find itself being championed by all and sundry, no matter what their first musical love was.

That’s because it came from nowhere, and was probably the best video ever made for a song of it’s genre, that being British techno music. The song isn’t too shabby either.

The Prodigy are a band who I was well in to right from the start, with their solid dance music hitting at completely the right time, when raves were all the rage, and ecstasy was just coming more on to the scene.

I never did them personally, and don’t condone drugs, but I understand why people would want to take a pill which then enabled them to dance for 12 hours in a huge tent with thousands of other similar minded sweaty individuals.

But enough nostalgia. This song was after all that had died down quite a bit, and dance music had definitely crossed over to the mainstream. And this is a good example (if not the best) of how and why it did it.

Gone were the sounds and images only a select few who were off their head could enjoy. Here instead is a piece of music which gets everyone, and every party going, no matter who is in attendance.

The song is amazing, with a bassline which pulses like no other heard before. When you get Keith Flint, he of the strange hair and nose stud, starting to sing his messed up lyrics over the top, it’s a heady combination.

I don’t need to say much about the video, as it says it all for itself. Filmed in a disused tube line, it shows the band doing what they do best… which is manic dancing, and acting like utter headcases.

Song: 9/10
Video: 9/10
