Killed By The Video Star

The Pogues Feat. Kirsty MacColl - ‘Fairytale Of New York’ Christmas Video Review

by Dave Parrack on December 19th, 2007

It’s that time of year again, yes Christmas is just around the corner, with less a week to go before the big day is upon us. So I felt it was a fitting time to review some of my favourite Christmas songs of all time, with this one being the absolute best there is.

I actually don’t think it’s very well known outside of the UK and Ireland, except maybe for the Irish community in America.

The Pogues arent my favourite group by any means, with lead singer Shane MacGowan being one of those God awful folk crooners who sounds like he’s permanently drunk… and maybe he is.

But when he and the rest of The Pogues teamed up with the gorgeous Kirsty MacColl to record this Christmas song, something just seemed to click, and the result is glorious.

Matt Dillon strangely stars in the video, being the police officer who arrests MacGowan for supposedly being drunk on Christmas Eve.

The song speaks for itself, just listen to it and tell me it’s not fantastic. The thing is, it’s not exactly a feel good Christmas song, but it’s become an unmissable Christmas tradition.

The black and white of the video suits the mood, and the song, perfectly. The video is a combination of the band performing, with Kirsty and Shane singing to each other, and scenes which fit the lyrics.

This isn’t a song that will get you in the mood for Christmas, with no cheesy feel good sit around the tree and exchange presents mentality in sight, but it works perfectly regardless.

Song: 10/10
Video: 9/10
