The Pharcyde - ‘Drop’ Music Video Review | Ooh How Clever, It’s All Filmed In Reverse!
After seeing some of the dog shit videos that current hip hop artists are putting out there, I thought we should take it back a bit and go old skool for a true classic.
This is The Pharcyde with Drop, a video so good that I’ve watched it numerous times over the past few years, just because I can. I mean it is free on YouTube after all so do you blame me?
This video has none of your bling and booty type crap that the current crop of rap artists tend to want to stick fully in your face. Instead, it’s a cleverly filmed slice of art, and I love it.
The song itself is brilliant too, with a strong bassline, and some clever lyrics. It’s a very understated style, with none of the bravado and male superiority which seems to run through current releases.
The video is obviously filmed normally, but with the group doing moves in reverse so that when it’s played forward, it all looks bizarre but right in a weird way.
It works really well, and Coldplay stole the idea for The Scientist video, in which Chris Martin lives a car crash and aftermath in reverse. We even get a cameo from The Beastie Boys at one point!
