Killed By The Video Star

The Magic Numbers - ‘Forever Lost’ Video Review | Animation Knocks Pounds Off You

by Dave Parrack on December 16th, 2007

This was the début single by British Indie group The Magic Numbers. It’s an odd song, but once you hear it, you won’t be able to get it out of your head for days.

When I first heard it, and them, I assumed they were American, as they kind of have this odd inflection to their voices which my brain would only recognise as being from the other side of the pond.

They’re actually Londoners.

This song kind of harks back to the seventies a bit, with its happy pop sensibilities, and cheery sing along kind of vibe, and this style made for a nice change to the usual dreary, “Life is shit” kind of song.

It’s strange to choose an animated for the first single, because very few people know what you look like, and so can’t have an image in their heads as to whether the cartoon is correct or not.

We do get to see them briefly in the flesh, on a TV in a shop window. As you can see, apart from the odd few pounds in weight, it is pretty accurate on this occasion.

The video does a nice job of introducing the band, and telling a short version of their struggle to get noticed, and a record released.

I love it when the band harmonise, you can tell that they’re brothers and sisters (2 sets of), and long term friends.

I’m sure the bald guy with the beard at the end is Michael Eavis, the organiser of Glastonbury, which would make sense, as they played the festival last year.

The band have gone on to great things, and now have two albums released, but this is the video which got me in to them, and it’s still nice to watch from time to time.

Song: 7/10
