The Bee Gees - ‘Stayin’ Alive’ | It’s Cheesy & Crap, But It Works, & I Don’t Know Why!

by Dave Parrack on November 26th, 2007

What’s the first thing you think of when you think of a classic disco record, sung by men with higher voices than most women? The answer is obvious… a disused film set, with dilapidated buildings, and a non working train station.

Okay, you probably don’t think that way, but when it came to making a video for Stayin’ Alive, the second Bee Gees song to come from Saturday Night Fever.

The song is a classic, with a funky bassline, and the catchiest tune known to man or beast. But we’re here to talk about the video…

Everyone knows this video, but why was it made the way it was? I just don’t get the concept, and what it has to do with the Bee Gees, disco, or anything musical whatsoever.

What we get is the three Bee Gees walking through the film set in time to the beat, and with some snappy clothes on. I’m convinced that had Maurice’s trousers been any tighter, they would have garotted him on the spot, and prevented him ever having kids.

Having the guys singing through the windows (read empty holes in buildings) is inspired, but God knows why.

It’s a video which shouldn’t work, as it has nothing to do with anything, and seems to have been shot just because they had the set there and they could use it, but it does.

I should remember that this was the 1970s, and music videos weren’t exactly in vogue at this point, so I’ll give it a bit of slack.

Classic song and actually a classic video, just don’t ask me why!

Song: 8/10
Video 7/10
