Sum 41 - ‘Fat Lip’ Music Video Review
It’s time for a classic, at least a modern one, in the shape of Sum 41’s brilliant Fat Lip. This song, and the band themselves seemingly came out of nowhere, or Canada as it’s more commonly known… I keed, I keed!
I loved this video as soon as I saw it, which must have been about 5 or 6 years ago, although in some ways it seems like yesterday. It was fresh, new, and innovative, and seemed to latch on to the youth culture of the time perfectly.
The song has a killer riff, which has seen it rewarded with a place on Guitar Hero, amongst others. And along with the brash singing style, it makes for a rock anthem of preposterous quality.
The only thing that threatened to ruin the band’s obvious punk credibility was the lead singer being called Deryck Whibley… I mean, have you ever heard a less rock ‘n’ roll name than that?
Having said that, the guy ended up marrying Avril Lavigne so to say I’m a little jealous is an understatement.
The video itself is awesome, showing the band performing at what looks like a hastily arranged concert/skate park/party. The beauty of it is purely in the fact it focusses on the kids, and what they’re doing in and around the band.
Simple, but effective, and a video which stands up to scrutiny (at least mine) even to this day.
