September - ‘Cry For You’ Music Video Review | But What Is That Sample?
This song has just entered the UK charts at number 9, although apparently it’s been around for a while now. However, I’ve just discovered it myself so here’s a quick review.
I’ve never heard of September before, although she is apparently Swedish singer Petra Marklund, and she’s been around for ages as a Europop dance type act, which is probably why I’m out of the loop.
This song has done extremely well around the world, even reaching number one in the US dance airplay charts. Us Brits are obviously way behind the times!
There’s no doubting it is a catchy song, although how much it owes to the sample, which I racked my brains for ages working out what is was, is open to question.
In the end, Wikipedia came to my rescue, with the knowledge that its a sample from Bronksi Beat’s Smalltown Boy. I really hope they’ve got credit for the sample, as its almost note for note.
As with most Europop, the song is shallow, and hasn’t got anything to it beyond what you immediately see: a catchy dance beat, and some nice vocals over the top.
The video above is the original version, and is pretty uninspiring, although in my view, its a lot better than the UK version (embedded below), which is just September trying to mimic Kylie Minogue and failing badly.
In a nutshell, this is catchy but really has no depth past one listen. Except if you’re in a club, off your head, and wanting to dance all night. Then it’s bloody brilliant.
Song: 7/10
Video: 5/10
