Killed By The Video Star

Santogold - ‘L.E.S. Artistes’ Music Video Review | Alternative Is The Right Word

by Dave Parrack on May 14th, 2008

This is the first viewing of new artist Santogold which I’ve had the pleasure of, and I must say, I’m impressed.

Santogold is American singer/songwriter Santi White, who has seemed to burst on to the scene from absolutely nowhere. In the space of three days, I’ve gone from not knowing her, to seeing her everywhere.

This is her début video, for a song titled L.E.S. Artistes, however it doesn’t refer to anything French, instead stand for Lower East Side and the lyrics mock those from the area who think they are hip and cool.

Wkipedia quotes the singer as stating:

“[The Song] is playing on the fact that everyone tries to make things fancy and it’s really pretentious” and “about being accosted by the New York scene and the scenesters and hipsters, who are really not artists and are just pretending to be. They’re all about just being seen.”

What we end up with is a song which mixes quite traditional instruments and sounds but puts them together in a way which is innovative and original. It’s all topped off by Santogold’s unusual voice which reminds me of M.I.A. quite a bit.

The video is a strange one, but works as a result. It is apparently a homage to the film The Holy Mountain, and sees people dying in gruesome ways before the whole thing changes to normal everyday scenes instead, with red paint for blood etc.

I can’t get enough of this song or video, and Santogold has already proved she is one to watch.

Song: 8/10
