Sam Sparro - ‘Black and Gold’ Music Video Review | The New Gnarls Barkley Crazy?
Sam Sparro seems to have come from nowhere and launched himself a pop career which is getting a lot of attention here in the UK.
This is his début single, called Black and Gold, which gives a good taster of his soulful pop sound. I can also see this going down great in dance clubs, especially at the end of an evening when everyone is winding down.
Sparro is a Australian producer and songwriter who has been signed in the UK, and this is his first foray in to the charts. He made it to number 4 in the British singles chart this weekend.
The song is a mish-mash of different genres, but they all meld together very successfully. It reminds me of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy quite substantially, although I don’t think it will be quite as successful as that was.
Sparro’s voice works really well, being subtle enough to offer a nice bit of variety to the quite traditional dance beat underpinning the while song.
The video is weird, and looks strangely cheap in this day and age of complicated visual effects. But it kinds of fits the song, and is at least a little more inventive than the usual dance fare.
Song: 8/10
Video: 6/10
