Killed By The Video Star

Rage Against The Machine - ‘Renegades Of Funk’ Video Review | Enough Said!

by Dave Parrack on January 21st, 2008

It was only a matter of time before this song and video was featured on Killed By The Video Star. The reason? Because it’s one of my favourite ever music videos, and a kicking song to boot.

I’ve always loved Rage Against The Machine, well actually, that’s a lie, I didn’t love them before they existed obviously, like when I was a kid and stuff, but ever since hearing them, I’ve been a fan. Bloody pedants.

This song is probably one of my three favourites, along with Bulls On Parade (how happy was I to see it on the Guitar Hero III playlist) and Wake Up.

The fact that they are now back performing together fills me with both excitement and dread, the latter being a fear that they’ll never come over to play in the UK, and I’ll miss out again.

As with most of RATM’s songs, Renegades Of Funk has a political edge to it, with the song citing, and praising the people who have come before the current generation, both in music and life.

The song revolved around the idea that the world, society, and humans wouldn’t evolve and better themselves if no-one rebelled, or became renegades. A powerful thought, with a definite truth to it.

The video is even more awesome than the song, with a mixture of footage from uprisings, and riots, to pictures of the renegades that Zack de la Rocha is singing about.

It shouldn’t work, but it does, due to some clever editing, and the music bubbling under the visuals throughout. Great song, great video, and thoroughly brilliant band.

Song: 9/10

I’m not a huge RATM fan but this is one of my favorite songs. The rhythm, the beat, everything about this songs rocks to include the message.
