Radiohead - ‘No Surprises’ Video Review | Thom Yorke’s Head In A Goldfish Bowl
I’m a massive Radiohead fan, as can be witnessed by my gushing review of Jigsaw Falling Into Place from last month, and also the positive coverage I give them on Brit Music Scene.
I’ve been sat here tonight having a bit of a Radiohead evening, playing loads of their songs, and in particular, some of the more innovative videos they have made over the years.
No Surprises is one of my favourites, purely for it’s simple yet brilliant concept, and the fact that there’s no pretence, or mucking about. After all, it is just Thom Yorke with his head in a goldfish bowl.
The song is an absolute gem from OK Computer, being both brilliant, yet simple to boot. Some people have commented on YouTube describing it as being sad and depressing, but I just think it’s highly emotional.
It describes a mixture of the story of a troubled relationship, with some suicidal thoughts thrown in for good measure. See, I told you it wasn’t depressing.
The video basically features Thom Yorke in a goldfish bowl, which after half the song fills with water, which then drains out again for him to carry on singing the song.
I took it as a bit of a rebirth moment, drowning in normality, only to be allowed one last chance at life. It’s a must see video, and another Radiohead song which drags them out of the usual and in to the sublime.
Song: 8/10
Video: 9/10
