Mystery Jets - ‘Two Doors Down’ Music Video Review | Revisiting 80s Cheese
The Mystery Jets are a five piece Indie band from the UK who you probably haven’t heard of as yet. No, that’s not me being snobby, but unless you’re British, and in to new Indie, it’s just a statistical fact.
So I am here to teach you, and to that end, here is their new single, Two Doors Down, which comes with a hefty slice of 1980s cheese.
The song immediately transports me back to the 1980s, the days of loose fitting jackets and over-couiffered hair. And the video then goes and does the same with spots on.
However, unlike Kylie Minogue’s latest, In My Arms, this is a good thing, because it’s all done with a healthy dose of wit and parody.
The song borrows so much from the 8s it could have been released back in the day, but it’s all brought bang up to date so that it also weirdly fits in the current day and age. Yes, even the saxophone.
The video is an almost faultless recreation of an 80s pop promo, with bright colours, ill-fitting clothes, and women dancing erratically in the background.
While I think the band will have trouble gaining traction anywhere other than the UK, it doesn’t matter. They are a gem of a band who I for one would be happy to keep all to ourselves.
Song: 8/10
