Modest Mouse - ‘Missed The Boat’ Video Review | Answers On A Postcard Please

by Dave Parrack on January 8th, 2008

This is Missed The Boat, the new release from American indie rockers Modest Mouse.

It’s only after doing a quick bit of research on the band for this review, that I realised how long Modest Mouse have been around. I’ll be honest and admit I’d never heard of them before the brilliant Float On came out a few years ago.

They’re a strange band, with a strange but wonderful that you’re either going to love or hate. Or like me you might like the odd track while just leaving the rest well alone for being just a bit too alternative.

This song is one of their better ones, with a strong bassline, and a good sound which has a chance of appealing to the masses more than the usual fare from the band.

The inclusion of Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr in the line up helps a great deal, offering them a bit more credence outside of America than they might have experienced before.

The video is brilliant, but as weird as the song, and the sound which accompanies it. It shows a mad scientist type guy inventing a robot to help him out around the house, but not everything goes according to plan.

I don’t really understand the meaning of it all, but I can only imagine its demonstrating that people, or maybe even devices are more than the sum of their parts? I don’t know, but answers on a postcard explaining it in more detail would be greatly received.

Song: 7/10
Video: 8/10
