Killed By The Video Star

Mark Ronson Feat. Alex Greenwald - ‘Just’ Video Review | Doing Radiohead Justice?

by Dave Parrack on February 26th, 2008

Mark Ronson is back again, with another release from his album of covers, Version. This time its the Radiohead classic Just, and the question again is: Which version is better?

We’ve already looked at both versions of Valerie, with me, in my ultimate wisdom (huhum) deciding that the Zutons original is better than the Amy Winehouse cover… but only just (pun intended).

The song is obviously great, being by Radiohead, and I’ll admit that Mark Ronson hasn’t screwed it up. It’s different than the original, being a jazzed up, and slightly higher tempo version, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Mark Ronson Playing Live

Unlike the video for Valerie, this time Mark Ronson has decided to try and mimic the original, just with a lot less serious bent to the proceedings. It works brilliantly, and ends up funny and well made.

The “Why don’t you try writing your own songs!” deserves some credit, as at least Ronson can laugh at himself.

For those of you who haven’t seen the original video, we’ll take a look at it tomorrow, but for now, enjoy this supremely made cover. Both Ronson and Greenwald (from Phantom Planet) do a fantastic job, and this doesn’t end up as the mess it could have easily become.

Song: 8/10

Mark Ronson is a musical genius- He takes a song, completely flips it around and makes it a separate entity from it’s original, making you like both versions for entirely different reasons. He’s gold.
