Killed By The Video Star

Madcon - ‘Beggin’ Official Music Video Review | Norwegian Hip-Hop… Nope, Not Kidding

by Dave Parrack on July 15th, 2008

This song, Beggin’, by Madcon grabs you instantly and refuses to let go. It combines dance elements with hip-hop, in a style that reminds me of Gnarls Barkley… when they were good.

I’d never actually heard of these guys before this song, but it’s one of those single which makes you go and find more from an artist. If it ends up all being crap, then so be it, but they at least grabbed my attention with this one song.

And what’s more, they’re Norwegian. But I only know that from doing my flimsy research on Wikipedia (my lifelong companion). If I hadn’t searched, I would have written this review thinking they were American as the Pilgrim Fathers. Although, thinking about it, they were immigrants, so how does that work?

Madcon So Dark The Con Of Man

The song is just so Goddamn catchy, and grabs you on first listen. It’s actually a cover of a song originally performed in 1967 by The Four Seasons, though I doubt the original had quite so much funk about it.

The video is also really good, although it lacks a cohesive strand running through it. The guys go from playing Halo 3 in their apartment to being 1970s style blaxploitation movie stars, complete with afros, and a girl on each arm.

I didn’t even know Norway had a music industry, let alone a hip-hop scene, so the origins of this song, and group are a really nice surprise. And there was me thinking Norway was all about long nights and heavy drinking.

Song: 8/10
Video: 8/10
