Lupe Fiasco - ‘Superstar’ Music Video Review | Is Brung A Real Word Now?
I’d never heard of Lupe Fiasco before this song came out, but now I hear him everywhere I go, be it the local pub, shopping mall or on every music television channel this side of MTV.
Is he Kanye West’s younger brother or something? As he looks and acts like a mini Kanye, with the same style, both of clothes and rap, and a similar “I’m better than you attitude”.
I’m still not entirely sure about this song, even after hearing it for the last month or so. The main reason being that its one of those songs that only works because of the collaboration.
I had to Wikipedia who the guy who sings the chorus was, but now I know, I’m none the wiser. Apart from knowing his name is Matthew Santos, I’ve never heard of him either.
His part in the song is the best thing about it, and I find myself sitting through the rap just waiting to get through to the chorus.
It doesn’t help that Lupe has actually invented a word just to make one of his rhymes work, using brung instead of brought. That’s just ultra annoying for an English grammar Nazi like me.
The video only deserves a one line review, because to put it bluntly, it’s cheap, cheerful, and does nothing to reverse the trend for hip hop stereotypes.
Basically, we have the rapper doing some hand movements towards the camera, and then a few honeys walking around and showing off their booties. Original? Um, no, which is very un-Kanyeish. Oh look, I just invented a word… it’s catching.
Song: 7/10
Video: 2/10
