Kelly Rowland Feat. Gym Class Heroes - ‘Daylight’ Official Music Video Review
Kelly Rowland may not be quite as bootylicious as Beyonce Knowles, but she’s probably the best singer in Destiny’s Child. Ooh, a bit of controversy here on Killed By The Video Star.
Don’t get me wrong, I adore Beyonce, and not only for her butt, for other reasons too… her chest, her face, her silky smooth complexion etc etc. Oh and her voice.
While Beyonce has gone one way with her solo career, Rowland has taken another path. They have used famous rappers to gain some airplay - Beyonce with Jay-Z (naturally), and Kelly with Nelly, who has now teamed up with Fergie for a truly awful song.
Rowland just comes across as more traditional, and more of a natural singer. This song, the first to be released from her Ms Kelly: Diva Deluxe album proves the point spectacularly well.
For starters it’s a cover, originally released by Bobby Womack back in the day, but it’s obviously been given a makeover for the 21st century, and a nice one at that.
The song rocks, being recognisable as the original while updating it for the current market. Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes also helps, he’s the guy on the little girl’s push-bike at the end. Nope, no idea why.
The video shows a party being set up on a rooftop somewhere in what looks like Manhattan. I’m British so any big city scene looks like it is in Manhattan to me. It’s fun if not exactly highly original or inventive.
Song: 8/10
Video: 6/10
