Jump? Yessir, Devil-Eyed Man, Sir!
Van Halen
“Jump”
Album: 1984
I like “Jump” as much as the next desperately trying to be ironically hip guy does, but it appears that the video was made before ideas like “pacing,” and “concept” were part of the music video lexicon, and ideas like “awkwardly lengthy shots” and “lots of Qualludes” were the name of the game.
What haunts me most about the video are the dead, dead eyes of David Lee Roth. I’m not sure if he and the director were going for “bedroom eyes” or “serial killer stare,” but they hit something in between that is cold enough to charm the pants off Mr. Freeze.
Not to mention the height of that slow motion kick at 1:15…
It looks like something a mentally unstable child would do to a Ken doll right before sawing its head off to see if there’s anything inside.
Song: 7/10
Video: 2 cold, unnerving stares/10
Chicks that would love to get lost in those black, beady pits Roth calls ‘eyes’: 1.2 million.
