Killed By The Video Star

John Mayer - ‘Say (What You Need to Say)’ Music Video Review | From ‘The Bucket List’

by Dave Parrack on April 25th, 2008

John Mayer is another artist who hasn’t really reached any level of fame over here in the UK, so this is my first real glimpse of him, and I’m not too impressed.

Maybe this song, Say (What You Need to Say), isn’t a fair representation of his talent, as he wrote it especially for the movie The Bucket List, starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson.

So rather than being from his heart, and having personal experience woven through the lyrics, its more to do with how he thinks the characters in the film would feel.

The song isn’t that bad, but it just doesn’t really ever get started. It’s the musical equivalent of watching paint dry, and just dulls me every time I hear it.

And then we get to the video, which takes the boringness of the song and turns the excitement levels down by another couple of notches.

I know, what can they do with a song for a film right? But man, even I could do more than just have various dull scenes from the film spliced in with Mayer strumming his guitar in a white room.

I understand the concept of minimalism, but this video pushes it to the extreme. Plus, the movie looks crap, with Freeman and Nicholson just turning up for a fat pay cheque.

Song: 4/10
