Killed By The Video Star

Ice Cube - ‘Today Was A Good Day’ Video Review | Or Not, As The Case May Be

by Dave Parrack on January 19th, 2008

After reviewing Ice Cube’s new song Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It last week, I thought I should raid the archives for a bit of an old skool classic in the form of Today Was A Good Day.

This song is brilliant, and worth featuring here on Killed By The Video Star if only for its top notch bassline, which could wake the neighbours 2 blocks away if played at the appropriately loud levels.

As with most rap or hip hop songs, the beat and rhythm of the song don’t actually change much, being just there constantly, and allowing the voice and lyrics to do the bulk of the work.

This song is no different, but when you have a voice as tuned in and perfect as Ice Cube, that’s exactly how it should be. It certainly lends more to the old skool than the new style of sample laden track though.

The video for this song does exactly what it should do, detailing Ice Cube’s day, as he raps about it. If the director had done any different than that, then he would have deserved a good beating.

Cube looks like a hard ass in this video, with a real gangsta face on him, as if he’d shoot you as soon as look at you… which I’m sure he wouldn’t at all. Huhum.

In the end though, surrounded by police, all armed to the teeth, it seems it ends up as not such a good day after all. Eh well, there’s always tomorrow…

Song: 8/10
