Green Day - ‘Basket Case’ Video Review | Is This What Happens In All Hospitals?

by Dave Parrack on February 2nd, 2008

I’ve loved Green Day ever since they burst on to the scene with this video. I know they’ve changed a bit since then, but this song, and video still stand up to scrutiny 13 years after it was first released.

I remember the debate about what kind of music this was when it first came out: Was it punk, rock, punk rock, indie or a whole new genre of its own making? I think they’re now classed as pop punk.

This song came out of nowhere, at least for me as a 16/17 year old who was just starting to get in to guitar music, having wasted too many of my teenage years on crappy dance music.

The start of the video is perfection, with the band all being wheeled, or lead in to position behind the mic stands and instruments. It’s like until the moment they start playing, they are nothing, and then they come alive.

I assume all hospitals for mentally ill people aren’t like this, otherwise every great new band would emerge from inside their walls. The colours used in the video still seem strange to this day, with bright, vibrant colours everywhere.

The lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong does a brilliant job of looking mentally ill in this video, with flicks and facial expressions making him seem right at home.

Song: 9/10
Video: 9/10
