Gabriella Cilmi - ‘Sweet About Me’ Music Video Review | The Australian Duffy?
Gabriella Cilmi has come seemingly out of nowhere to have chart success in her native Australia, as well as New Zealand, the UK, and Ireland. And she’s done it with this brilliant song called Sweet About Me.
The other day I reviewed a song by an Australian band called Pendulum, who have moved to the UK to find fame and fortune. I fully expect Cilmi to do the same thing soon as she knows where the party’s at!
This instantly reminded me of Duffy, the up and coming British star who is being touted as the new, cleaner version of Amy Winehouse, just with a better voice.
There’s the same nod to the 1960s in both their work so far, and it makes for an intriguing blend of bang up to date lyrics and vocals mixed in with some retro R’n'B.
The song is catchy, a quality not lost on the marketing executives who have seen fit to put this in adverts and as a bed on several television shows already.
The video is not the best, and the plot twist of having several men being tortured or kept prisoner by Cilmi is only good for one viewing. However, she is gorgeous, and that helps somewhat. Also, the guy playing the double bass looks startlingly like Mick Hucknall - something I don’t want to see on my TV before breakfast.
Song: 9/10
Video: 6/10
