Fall Out Boy - ‘Sugar, We’re Going Down’ Video Review | What The… Antlers Huh?
This video was the first glimpse I ever had of Fall Out Boy, and I was hooked from then on in. The song is brilliant, and the video is eye catching, if not a bit weird, to say the least.
Sugar, We’re Going Down was the first single, taken from debut album From Under The Cork Tree. It showed the brand of pop punk panache that has become a trademark of the American band.
The video is more interesting than the song though, being directed by Matt Lenski and showing the story of a weird fairytale which details how a kid with antlers is disowned and rejected. Then he meets a girl and falls in love, although, again, because of the antlers, her father doesn’t approve. The father ends up trying to shoot the antler laden kid, but gets run over in the process, revealing little antler feet.
When I first saw this I thought that meant they were related, but now I guess it just means he also had something weird about him which he has tried to hide.
This strange story is interspersed with the eponymous footage of the band performing live, which introduces us to lead singer Patrick’s sideburns (of which I’m jealous).
I love the video, and it’s perfect for a debut song as it makes you want to hear and see more from the band with the weird antler kid story vid. Fall Out Boy have obviously gone on to be hugely successful, but this is still one of my favourite songs of theirs.
Song: 9/10
