Killed By The Video Star

Estelle - ‘1980′ Music Video Review | Estelle Before The Americans Loved Her

by Dave Parrack on March 24th, 2008

Right now Estelle is sitting pretty at the top of the British music charts, and is liable to do just as well in America with the help of her collaboration with Kanye West on American Boy.

But she’s actually been around for a few years now, and had a couple of songs enter the charts back in 2004. This, 1980, was one of them, and her official first single.

She’s changed her look somewhat, and the almost bowl haircut has thankfully vanished. Also gone is the chav wear, to be replaced by hip hip clothes.

I actually really like this song, and think it should have done better at the time than it did.

It’s a semi-autobiographical song about her life, with the 1980 obviously referring to the year she was born. The storytelling style works really well, and her voice delivers it in style.

The video okay but nothing special, just showing Estelle performing in and around her house, with scenes of what she is talking about flashing up.

There’s no doubt she’s come a long way since this single came out, but I thought it would be a good time to trace her career back. Good luck in America Estelle!

Song: 8/10
