Killed By The Video Star

Duffy - ‘Warwick Avenue’ Music Video Review | Transporting Me Back To The 1960s

by Dave Parrack on May 4th, 2008

Duffy is back, releasing her second single, Warwick Avenue, as a follow up to the huge hit that was Mercy. And even more than her début, this song transports me back in time to the 1960s.

Not that I was ever alive in the 60s, I’m old but not that old, but it gives me a 60s vibe, and reminds me of video and audio clips I’ve seen and heard of Dusty Springfield back in the day.

The song is a simple love song, about the end of a relationship, which revolves around the London underground station Warwick Avenue.

Duffy’s voice is absolutely stunning, and if possible, this single shows it off even better than Mercy did. Lyrically, I also think this is a stronger song, though it doesn’t have the instant appeal that her début had.

The video is very simple, but it doesn’t suffer as a result, in fact it’s brought to life by one thing - the fact that Duffy manages to shed a tear or two.

That part reminds me of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares To You, and in the same way that her tears in that video seem real, Duffy’s crying makes you connect with her and gives the whole thing added meaning.

This round in the battle to become Amy Winehouse’ cleaner, more productive successor definitely goes to Duffy. Adele needs to change direction, and drop all the funny facial expressions.

Song: 9/10
Video: 9/10
