Duffy - ‘Mercy’ Music Video Review | The New Amy Winehouse? - And Not A Junkie!
Those of you outside of the UK may not have heard of Duffy yet, but along with Adele, she is being touted as the new Amy Winehouse, even though the last time I checked, the old one is still with us.
Basically, the British music industry works like this: A really successful artist makes a name for themselves, and dominates a particular year; Every other record label looks for the next version of that artist.
This song, called Mercy is currently at number one in the British charts so maybe that formulaic approach to innovation isn’t such a bad idea after all.
This song, and the video which accompanies it is a lesson in minimalism, with almost everything stripped away to allow the star of the show, namely Duffy’s extraordinary voice, to shine through.
It’s really successful, as despite not having much of anything going on, the song is catchy, and stays in your subconscious long after it finished playing.
The video has nothing much in it apart from Duffy singing on a small stage, and people who look like they’re from the 1960s dancing around her. But it works by making us focus on her, who is after all, the star of the show.
Song: 8/10
Video: 5/10
