Country Music Video Week, Here On IHateMyself.Com
Hey, so here’s the deal.
I have friends who read this blog, and one of them pointed out that one of the genres I’ve yet to touch is country. In my defense, this is because country music is heinous.
I argued that my Bright Eyes video the other week came pretty close, but was rebuffed. Apparently, it wasn’t “country enough.” Meaning? Meaning that by “country music” my friend means “terrible pop music marketed to specific target markets in the U.S. by infusing it with musical stylings copped from areas of the American South and West and not usually found in standard rock and pop music.”
So in that case, no, I haven’t really featured much in the way of “country music.” Guess what though, friends? That’s gonna change this week. Leading up to the most ghoulish holiday of the year, I’m going to do one full week of country music videos–my way, and the pop way.
We’ll start off with something you’ll all recognize.
Billy Ray Cyrus
“Achy Breaky Heart”
Album: Achy Breaky Heart
This man is a national treasure. Not only did he popularize the mullet, but he inspired a whole nation to join hands in solidarity and…dance…in a line. For peace. Or to bear his children. Or something.
Also, on a personal note, I grew up in Central PA where I’m pretty sure they just devoted entire radio stations to the repeat airing of this song at the height of its inexplicable popularity. Long story short, first-grade-me tripped down the stairs of a school bus to this song. The cool kids never spoke to me again. So thank you, Billy Ray, for using your musical voodoo to paralyze my limbs in front of the whole bus. May the joy be sapped from your life the way it was from mine.
