Cliff Richard - ‘Mistletoe and Wine’ Video Review | Have A Mullet Christmas

by Dave Parrack on December 23rd, 2007

You’ve had two of my favourite Christmas songs, so now it’s time for two of my least favourite. We start with Cliff Richard’s Mistletoe and Wine.

I actually liked this song when it was first released. My excuses are: It was 1988, I was 11 years old, and I had bad taste. What more can I say?

Cliff Richard is present in the video, in all his mulleted glory, as he brings Christmas back to the traditional, with mentions of Christian rhyme and Jesus.

I’m not anti religious, but Cliff is a born again Christian, who threw his rock and roll lifestyle away in the 1960s to become a churchgoer.

Which means that I, and every British person along with me, has been subjected to him sticking it down our throats ever since.

The song isn’t that bad, at least for a Christmas themed pop ballad, but it also has no spark, no imagination, and just not enough excitement in it to get me going.

It does kind of get me in the Christmas spirit, but only as a sentimental kind of thing, rather than the song on it’s own strength.

The video has been mocked by plenty before me, mainly for the weird swaying dance Cliff does from about 2:25 in. The mullet just sets the whole thing off, and is definitely not one of Cliff’s greatest moments.

Song: 5/10
Video: 4/10
