Killed By The Video Star

Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket | What Do You Mean, You Don’t Like It?

by Dave Parrack on December 6th, 2007

An oldie but goodie today for all readers of Killed By The Video Star, with Cake’s Short Skirt, Long Jacket.

I remember the first time I saw this on MTV and thought to myself “what the hell?” The song is class, but at the time I wondered what the band were thinking asking people what they thought of the song live on camera.

Now, all these years later, I think it’s brilliant, and wonder why a band hadn’t thought of it before. I suppose it comes down to whether you are afraid of people disliking your song or not.

The video has some characters, such as the black guy who thinks he’s the funniest guy in the world, and the student who really doesn’t say anything, and should just piss of back to college.

I wonder if some of them were pre-arranged or whether they were just all people off the street asked what they thought on first listen.

This song has managed to escape dying a death in the 90s from whence it came, mainly from being used as the theme song to the NBC series Chuck.

If I’d have been there on that day in California, I think I would have nodded my head along to the bassline, smiled my way through the song, and then at the end, calmly and concisely said “Brilliant!” before walking off in to the sunset.

Song: 8/10
Video: 8/10
