Bjork - ‘Declare Independence’ Video Review | Michel Gondry Directed Video
This is Bjork’s brand new single Declare Independence, which isn’t released until January 1st 2008, but as soon as I saw the video, I knew I had to get it on Killed By The Video Star.
Straight away, I’ve got to say, how absolutely bizarre this whole thing is, with both the song and video confusing the hell out of me. That’s not to say it’s bad at all, but you’ve got to admit, it’s ultra confusing.
Bjork seems to be all about experimentation now, dropping the more traditional sides of her work to try and push the boundaries with everything she does.
I used to be in to her when she first started as a solo singer, because although she was always alternative, and a bit odd, it was still recognisable as pop music.
The song does what it says on the tin, with Bjork urging people to declare independence. It’s kind of catchy, despite or maybe because of it’s weirdness.
This video just adds to that weirdness, piling strange on top of bizarre to form a sort of “What the hell is going on?” crust.
We see a guy playing a kind of instrument, whose strings then coincide with Bjork’s singing voice, before travelling onwards and out to a bunch of military stooges.
Spray paint then gets added to the mix, being sprayed in time to the beats, which the soldiers start jumping along to, causing all manner of other weird shit to begin.
It’s a good song, although not my normal cup of tea, and the video is brilliantly bizarre, and very fitting to the music it’s there to promote and accompany.
Song: 7/10
Video: 9/10
Weirdness: 11/10
