Beastie Boys - ‘Sabotage’ Music Video Review | Is This The Best Music Video Ever Made?
This is going to split people right down the middle. Not literally of course, that would just be sick, but it will divide people between those who love this video, and those who hate it.
Whichever camp you’re in, you can’t fail to realise what a stroke of genius it is, both in content and delivery.
Old 1970s cop shows are ripe for spoofing, with their portrayal of greasy fat detectives who eat doughnuts all day, and have porn moustaches.
And I think that’s where this video’s brilliance lies. It also helps that it’s done with such style and panache, and almost feels like a TV show or movie itself.
The song is brilliant too, and just wraps the whole thing up in a cosy blanket of retro velvet which will be hard to repeat, or God forbid, do better than.
The performances are all spot on, and the Beastie Boys show us they could have been comedy actors if their music careers hadn’t quite taken off.
The whole thing works so well, I think it is the greatest music video ever made. It’s not the most expensive, or flashy, but for me, it has yet to be outdone.
Song: 9/10
Video: 10/10
