Killed By The Video Star

Ashanti - ‘The Way That I Love You’ Music Video Review | Just Too Much Going On

by Dave Parrack on March 28th, 2008

There is a fine line between being subtle, and having just too God damn much going on with a song. And this, The Way That I Love You by Ashanti is a fine example of that line being crossed.

Both the song and the video have far too much going on, and here’s why.

However strong Ashanti’s voice may be, and it is a very vocal performance, it’s ruined and overshadowed by all the other mish-mash of crap going on in the background.

Certain genres lend themselves well to this type of thing, with punk or indie particularly benefiting from having many different instruments and elements to a song.

R ‘n’ B though isn’t one of them, and it should, more often than not, be all about the voice. Alicia Keys is probably the best example of this, as she lets’ nothing else get in the way.

The video suffers from the same fate, with too much going on, and when couple with the song itself, which is always the case unless you make a habit of watching music videos with the sound muted, your brain struggles to take it all in.

Song: 6/10
Video: 7/10
