Attention all Blink 182 wannabe bands: “funny” music videos are much tougher to make than you think. Trust me, I’ve tried. First of all, if the song you’re doing the video for is meant to sound sincere, you don’t necessarily have to make the Angela’s Ashes of music videos–but at least shoot for respecting the song you wrote. Blink made ridculous videos because their songs were ridiculous. They weren’t crooning earnestly about sunset tinted nostalgia, they were nasally intoning their thoughts on making love to their neighbor’s dog. As questionably funny as that may be, it at least made a perverse kind of sense that they would be running around naked for the entire video.
And that brings me to my second point–just because you get a bunch of your friends together in “funny” costumes to do “funny” things doesn’t mean anyone’s going to be laughing when the video’s finished. It’s kinda like that one time that…y’know…remember? Remember how funny that was? Ah, I guess you had to be there…
Yea. It’s just like that.
That’s not to say this video won’t be all over TV soon. It will be. People will eat it up and tell all their friends how, like, really funny it is for the same reason they told everyone how screamingly funny Napoleon Dynamite was–because it’s stupid and doesn’t ask you to think. People (and by “people” I mean teenage girls and the high school boys that write quotes on the inside of their science notebooks, so I’m using the term loosely) love “random” costumes and meaningless catchphrases. Ask SNL–that’s what’s kept them on the air for the past 20 years. As a matter of fact, I’m surprised this video doesn’t star Andy Samberg and a dick in a box.
