Alicia Keys - ‘No One’ | A Great Song But Yawn… How Dull Is This Video?
Even though I’m not a big fan of R’n'B, I’ve always had a soft spot for Alicia Keys. She seems to be the best in her genre with more talent in her little finger than Rihanna has in her whole body.
This song is great, very much getting back to the grass roots sound of Alicia Keys that we know and love from five or six years ago. The video however is a trip to Dullsville, via Boring Junction, and with a short detour to Obvious Town.
Nothing happens… absolutely nothing takes place in this video. All we get is Alicia sitting at a piano while wearing an awful off the shoulder number that makes her look like an 80s reject. And then a close up of some bling… exciting.
She mentions rain pouring down about halfway through the song, so the director brilliantly (and no doubt all on his own) came up with the ingenious idea of having Ms. Keys standing playing the piano… out in the rain. Wow, inspired.
I think even the makers of the video realised how dull the it all was at this point, and so decided to go blue. Unfortunately this didn’t involve Alicia stripping down to her undies and having a lesbian encounter, rather it just means giving everything a blue tinge. Inspired I must say, those directors are certainly worth the money they are paid when they make dross like this.
We finish with a crowd scene, which basically involves getting a crowd of extras in to pump their arms and make random gestures, all done to make it look like Alicia is massively popular and has lots of friends.
A good song, but a mish-mash of a video that starts badly, ends even worse, and does nothing of any note in the middle.
Song: 7/10
Video: 2/10
