Sgt. Pepper’s Terrible Video Club Band
Paul McCartney
“Dance Tonight”
Album: Memory Almost Full
This?! Really, Sir Paul, this? This is the best you could afford for the video for the lead single off your big, new, Starbucks released album?! Did the coffee plantation workers finally rebel this month, or did you really just spend the whole budget for your video on making over your kitchen to look like the set of Fraggle Rock? I think you must’ve, because the money doesn’t show anywhere else. The whole thing looks like you broke into some long-forgotten basement at the BBC and shot it on equipment left over from Faulty Towers.
The vibe you were shooting for is clear–the goofy red delivery truck, the different colored rooms, the “old-school” ghost effects, the minature dance club–Gondry could do this with his eyes closed. There’s a difference between whimsical and terrible though (for clarification, see The Dark Crystal vs. The Pagemaster), and you came down square in animated Macaulay Culkin land.
I don’t mean to be so harsh–I really do love your music, man! Tell ya what, I’ll make it up to you. Next time you feel like spending $200 on a music video, don’t even bother with the high school A/V club. Shoot me an email and I’ll do it for free. Sound good?
Awesome. I knew we’d see eye to eye on this one!
