2Pac (Tupac Shakur) - Ghetto Gospel | Without Elton John, Where Would He Be?
What is it about Tupac Shakur, or 2Pac to his friends, and hangers on? He’s been dead for years now, yet still somehow manages to release new records at an incredible rate. I’m not one for conspiracy theories but does no-one else think that kind of weird?
I’ve been wanting to get this off my chest for quite a while, but have never had the time nor place, until now.
If I’m not mistaken, more songs, and records have been released in 2Pac’s name since his death than before… which is quite an achievement. He has got to be the most successful dead guy ever to have, well, died.
I’m sure there are people out there who are spitting at their monitors while reading this because I am effectively dissing their hero. Look, you can praise as a rap god all you want, but to be honest I was never a fan.
There’s no doubt he had some talent, but he wasn’t the best rapper ever, like so many people claim now that he has unfortunately died, and probably gone on to a better place. I maintain that if he hadn’t been killed in that fateful drive-by shooting, he wouldn’t be lauded as much as he is now.
I’ve chosen this song, and video to make my point because it is shit. There, I said it.
I actually like Elton John, but what he was doing allowing one of his album tracks to be ripped off this way, I have no idea, unless of course he wanted to add another zero to his already vast bank balance. Oh, and act as if he’s down with the kids.
The song is tripe, with Elton’s singing not mixing at all well with Tupac’s harsh rapping. The Elton original wasn’t good enough to be released as a single when it was made, and nor was Tupac’s! So what we have here is a combination of two songs not considered good enough on their own merit.
I can’t actually be arsed to talk about the video as it’s the same old crap as you always get on these videos released after an artist has died. It’s just sentimental claptrap which is meant to have meaning but just turns in to performance.
The quote at the end does deserve special treatment though. I mean absolutely no disrespect to either Tupac, or his mother Afeni but the line reads “Remember to keep yourself alive, there is nothing more important than that”. I mean, no shit Sherlock, you reckon there’s nothing more important than being alive? Wow, I didn’t realise that, I’m glad you told me… sheesh.
